Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Is my liver really green? If you learn anatomy through textbooks, you might just think that. My students know that their organs are not exactly as pictured in our books, but my vivid storytelling isn't enough! Dissection materials would make our human body unit really pop…or squish and ooze.

I am a 7th grade math/science teacher at a small Title I public school in California founded on the notion that all students deserve an academically rigorous education in a safe space that pushes them to develop as Artists, Scholars, and Warriors.

Ninety-three percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch; seventy percent of our students are English language learners. In addition the language needs in our classroom, many students have special learning needs including auditory and visual processing disorders. Our school is dedicated to providing our students with the tools and education to prepare them for college. We work closely with the community and parents to prepare our students for college.

My Project

These resources would allow my students to discover anatomy through hands on inquiry and experience the work of real scientists. Learning the skeletal system goes from tedious to enthralling when students are piecing together the rat an owl ate for dinner or identifying bones on a life sized skeleton. Dissection tools and pans can be used for a number of small investigations, building up to a group dissection of a fetal pig. Students can apply their knowledge of the structures and functions of the human body as they explore an anatomically similar creature. Even the best textbook illustrations can only go so far to convey the connections between organs and the way that all of those feet of intestines could fit in your abdomen. Taking our lessons from the two-dimensional textbook page to a real body gives students a more accurate picture of anatomy and a deeper understanding of their own bodies.

In addition to the instant engagement of “oooh, gross” science, hands on experience is critical for English language learners and students with special needs.

Having something as tangible as a mouse femur or a pig’s heart allows students to make the jump from memorizing to actually applying their knowledge. For some, this will be a real challenge to push their comfort zone; for others, it might be the moment they knew that Biology was the path for them.
