Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hi! I teach five periods of seventh grade life science and health. In my classroom I like to use hands-on-learning models as visuals to help students get a better understanding of the human body's makeup.

Last year was the first year I had to teach the unit on the skeletal system without a life size model. We only have one human skeleton model for the entire school, but it is all beat up and broken due to overuse and abuse of care through out the years. So last year the teacher, whose room it is stored in, said it could no longer be transferred due to its condition. So I would really love it if I could have a new model that I could have to use in my room this year. I don't teach this unit until the second semester, so if I could get one soon, I would have it in time for the lessons.

It would benefit my students to see a life size model and help them learn the names of the bones better as I point out the bones and say the names to them in class, as opposed to learning the names of the bones from a flat non-dimensional picture from their book or from my PowerPoint alone. It will also come in handy when I test them on the names of the bones and joints. The first few years I taught this lesson I pointed to the bone and they had to write the name of it on their paper. I loved testing this unit in this manner. Last year, I didn't have one and I really missed having it in my lessons and assessment. Even students asked me why we didn't have one and then I explained the situation to them.

I really feel that every life science/health classroom should have a life size skeletal model. The students will get a better idea of how joints, ligaments, and tendons play a role in the movement of the human body, and will better understand how the individual bones provide support and structure. I appreciate any help you can give in bringing this model into my classroom. Thank you so much!
