Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an amazing, 100% Title I elementary school full of almost 600 smiling faces diligently working to reach our goals.

My students work hard to grow in all areas, including the Four Domains of Library: Think, Grow, Create, and Share.

Half of our students are beautifully bilingual, with 46% designated as limited English proficient. We are a neighborhood where families look out for one another. Our students walk to or are dropped off at school, with buses providing transportation only for our students in self-contained classes. Our transiency and chronic absenteeism rates are in the double digits and are higher than the district average. The digital divide, food insecurities, and being in a book desert with low book access are real issues for many of our hard-working families. While we have obstacles to overcome, our dedicated staff, students, and families are working to show that success is building a community that cares for, supports, and works diligently for our wonderful and talented learners.

My Project

Every day another student comes to realize that Library is every topic and subject; that we not only check out books and tech, but also meet a variety of needs. Some of those needs include how to stay healthy. Whether it is fiction or nonfiction, books inspire us to stay healthy.

Former Nevada Young Reader Award book Hula-Hoopin' Queen by Thelma Lynne Godin, illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton will inspire us to read and move and groove to stay healthy!

We will use the book and hula-hoops to inspire fun ways to exercise and get healthy.
