My Students
It can sometimes be hard to get kids interested in reading books for fun. I have discovered two books that so thoroughly capture the hearts and imagination of my students that they are willing to reread each book even though they have over 500 pages each!
I teach fourth grade in a public school classroom.
Currently there are 22 students in my class. It is a happy active class full of children who enjoy learning and each other. They enjoy being creative and aspire to do their best at school. The children come from a variety of backgrounds, but it is mostly middle class, although our school qualifies as a moderate poverty school.
My Project
I love to read books to my students and enjoy introducing them to books that will capture their imaginations. Brian Selznick has written two such books, "The Adventure of Hugo Cabret" and "Wonderstruck", filled with wonderful stories and drawings that have become classroom favorites. My students really enjoy all the additional information they learn about the world and recent history that is tied into both books. We explore these extra topics with much enthusiasm.
How do I know they enjoy the books? After reading both books last fall, my students continue to check out all the available library copies of each book. This has gone on for months now as students wait their turn to reread both stories. I have never seen so much enthusiasm in fourth graders over the reading of books.
My students would benefit from having multiple copies of each book for use during the reading of the story, for completing classroom activities, for close-up viewing of the artwork, and for rereading.
I think it is wonderful when students can't wait to read a book.
I am thrilled when I find a book that brings them so much joy. This project is guaranteed to put students noses deep into a rich enjoyable reading experience. Once students discover the joy of reading a good book, they take that motivation and continue reading other books. These two books, both with over 500 pages, give fourth graders the confidence and enthusiasm to become lifelong readers.
