Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For so many of the students on my campus they will be the first in their family to attend college. The valley that I work in is in extreme poverty with over 80% of the students qualifying for free and reduce lunch. We have a 15% 4 year college enrollement for students after graduation. I want to change the culture on my campus to a culture of college bound students. I want to inform and celebrate their decision to continue their education to increase career options that they will have.
By attending college, our students will establish career paths that are more economically fruitful for their families and to change the cycle of poverty that has existed in most of their families for generations.
Many of our students want to continue their education to give themselves more opportunities to improve their lives. They have worked hard outside of the classroom, many of them participating in sports, clubs, theater or band, or even working to help support their families. Our students have to overcome so many challenges to be successful in school to have a better future.
My Project
I am planning on celebrating the accomplishments of our Seniors that have been accepted to colleges, trade schools and enlisted in the military. We are going to decorate our gym with metallic latex burgundy balloons along with star shaped 19 inch foiled balloons. The gym floor will have 20 tables decorated with 11 x 8.5 inch signs of each college or post secondary career choices, Hersey’s kisses and buttermints labeled with labeled with graduation party round candy stickers. This celebration will include a signing party, a medal ceremony, and a vow that all those that have been honored on this day will continue to pursue their career path.
I have order signs and invitation to make this specific day more memorable. We are going to send special invitations home to parents of the students that are participating to include them in this important event. The students will be given a letter that they will sign to ceremonially commemorate their acceptance to pursue their College and Career Path.
