Help me give my students 10 copies of "How Was That Built?: The Stories Behind Awesome Structures", written by female structural engineer Roma Agrawal, one of the brains behind The Shard in London.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach Introduction to Engineering and Advanced Topics in Engineering to grades 9-12 at CHS. Each year we try to incorporate interesting literature into the coursework. Short stories are ideal for this course because we don't typically have time for students to read an entire novel.
The book "How Was That Built: The Stories Behind Awesome Structures" discusses the ingenious methods engineers have come up with to enable us to build underground, underwater, on ice, and even in space.
From skyscrapers that reach astonishing heights to bridges that span deep and wide rivers, the world is filled with awe-inspiring structures. But how do they work? Meet the extraordinary people who challenged our beliefs about what's possible, pioneering remarkable inventions that helped build the Brooklyn Bridge in the US, the Pantheon in Italy, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Shard in England and the Sapporo Dome in Japan.
This type of literature is perfect for our course. Concise articles that discuss very interesting structures, civil engineering, architecture, and mechanical engineering. Many of our students are from the Middle East and have personally seen the Burj Khalifa. This year I have three students who have visited Japan. We are so close to the Brooklyn Bridge that students do not have to travel far to see this amazing engineering feat.
Please help my students get a class set of this book so we can explore various structures and students will have the opportunity to research a building or structure they choose. They could make a model of the structure or create a 3D image in our software. The opportunities for hands-on activities are infinite. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our project.
