Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time you made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich all by yourself? My students are learning the importance of writing how to books so that others can follow their step by step directions in order to make something and do it correctly.
My girls attend a public Title One school, in South Carolina.
We are a single gender classroom of 25 kindergarten girls. All of my students receive free lunch. We are a great group of girls that simply love coming to school and love to learn. Since most have limited resources at home and only six have been to preschool or daycare, we really start from ground zero in August. By June, it is amazing to see how these precious girls have blossomed and are actually at home teaching their younger siblings and in some cases, teaching their parents how to read or even how to speak English.
My Project
As my girls begin to write, it is important that they have mentor texts to read and analyze before writing on their own. The students need to be able to hear and read published informational how to texts in order to understand the parts of a how to book such as the ones we are requesting. My girls must hear it, read it, and understand the genre before they can be expected to begin writing on their own. They will then use the texts as jumping off points for writing their own how to books.
With your generous support, my girls will be able to hear and read a variety of informational how to texts such as How to Blow Bubbles and How to Make a Bird House that they can use as mentor texts to become better readers and writers as they grow in their kindergarten year and throughout their lives.
