it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hands-on learning is the best type of learning experience. After a decade of teaching in the classroom, the most memorable projects are experiential. In this project, students will explore what does it mean to source, create, price, market and sell a product. This project will take place in economics class and rather than just discussing principles they have read in a textbook, they WILL see the economic principles come alive. They will research the history of candles, and explore what it means to run a candle making business. As part of this experience, students will write a business plan and this will guide their decisions for choosing their scents, logo, and marketing strategy. Students will conduct several tests of different fragrances and after surveying potential consumers they will decide upon a fragrance that best embodies their brand and also what their customers want. They will learn about the different harmful chemicals candle makers have used in the past. Students will research the different ingredients needed to make a natural candle. This will help them to understand ethics in business and why it is important to sell a product that doesn’t harm customers. Doing this will also prepare them to share this information with consumers when they are pitching and selling. In addition, students will focus on how to have financial success when running a company. They will identify the cost of running their candle making business and the impact it has on their pricing. Some questions they will grapple with are: How much of a profit do we want to make? How can my business thrive and not just stay afloat? Students who have done this project with me in the past, often rave about the real-world connections. Please join me in making this experience possible.
