How to Solve a Math Problem Without a Pencil.

My students need hands on math activities, tools, and manipulatives in order to express their math knowledge. Many of my students do not have the fine motor skills to grasp a writing utensil.

My Students

"There should be no such thing as boring mathematics" Edsger Dijkstra. In order to make math exciting and accessible for my students its important that I provide them hands on tools. My students are eager to learn, and we are amazed every day with what they are able to reveal about themselves, and their knowledge. The challenge comes with finding out what tools will allow them to show us their knowledge.

All of our students have autism.

This is a unique disability, not an intellectual, but a social and communication disability. This means that many of our students are non verbal, or unable to express their knowledge. Most of my students also have not developed the fine motor skills needed to hold a writing utensil. Not speaking or writing can make it challenging to express their knowledge. Using math tools to help solve problems a way for them to show what they know.

Our school is high poverty building where 100% of our students receive free lunch. Students come from all over the world, 28 different countries, mainly from refugee camps. There are four languages spoken in our room.

My Project

All of my students have autism and many of them have not developed the fine motor skills to write with a pencil. This does not mean they are not able to solve math problems, they just do not have the tools to show they know they information. I am given the regular education curriculum, but not the tools they need to access the information. I need hands on activities and tools for them to learn and prove their knowledge.

All students need to be given the opportunity to show what they know.

Autism is a social emotional disability, not an intellectual one. As a teacher my job is to find any means necessary to teach them and find out if they have understood what I have taught.
