I am a 6th grade English/Language Arts teacher. We are located in a high-need community and seek help as often as we can.
As our eagles soar to new heights in learning, there are several obstacles that they reach daily. One of the biggest struggles my students face is the lack of ability to use grade level appropriate academic vocabulary. I have implemented an activity called word study into my weekly schedule to expose my students to new vocabulary. They use the same "blah" words in every writing assignment and in conversation.
The word study assignment that the students complete will require the students to research the definition of new words. Along with the definition the students will also generate synonyms and antonyms for the new words so that they will be able to substitute them for the "blah words" they have been used to using. With a flourishing vocabulary the students will be able to demonstrate their communication skills better and also build their grades on written compositions. With better communication skills and grades, their self-esteem will also increase. An American Heritage Student Dictionary will allow my students to pursue the goal of increasing their vocabulary.
I am asking for 25 American Heritage dictionaries for my students to have as resources inthe classroom. Your help will ensure that my students use more advanced vocabulary that will "WOW" their families and friends. I don't have one classroom dictionary and there are none on my campus. Please help us in our mission to becoming grade level appropriate babbling eagles!
