My Project
In the eight years I've taught, I've learned a lot about how to build a bulletin board. First, and most important, you need student work. You need to give children the rich materials they need to create such work, and you need to give them the right balance of structure and freedom to produce such work, but those are both topics for another piece of writing. While students are engaged in doing the work, you need to document the work they are doing. This is so that you can make the process taking place in making the work really transparent. I take many, many photos of children at work and of student work, so a years worth of ink on my color printer comes to a not-inconsiderable sum. I also print the photos I take on photo paper and display the work and the photos using high quality card-stock. Most of our portraits are backed on such card-stock. I nearly always back my student work with paper cement as it creates a seamless surface. I really love doing these displays. I am so proud to showcase the amazing projects we do in the best way possible. I continue to be amazed by the experience of art-making with four and five year-olds and I hope I will be for many years to come. This type of display is very, very expensive to maintain however, for an entire year from a cost-of-materials perspective. I am hoping that you donors might subsidize the raw materials I need to keep the showcase going!
