Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"How to Become a World Traveler Without Going Anywhere," will allow my students to learn about places many of them would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about. Many of the 4th-8th graders who are learning about world geography come from families who are unable to provide real-life travel experiences. The surrounding community is largely rural and the majority of the students are unaware of the diverse world in which they live.
For the first time in our school's history, students in grades 4-8 will have the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Bee later this year. When I offered a Geography Club two years ago to 3-5th graders, I had 75 students sign-up! The students were excited to learn about the world around them, but the school had very limited geographic resources such as student atlases, interactive maps, books, or games that facilitated the development of their geographic knowledge in fun and engaging ways.
The student world atlases, maps, current events magazine, and geographic games will offer my students a wide range of possible resources they can use to look for answers to their questions about the world. As a result of the current state of education, geography continues to get pushed out of the curriculum. Most of my students enter my classroom with little or no geographic knowledge beyond their immediate environment. Through this project and the use of these resources, my students will begin to understand what it is to become a world traveler. My immediate goal is for them to learn basic 'facts' about countries and people. My long term goal is for them to become passionate about the world and the other people in it.
Your help will make it possible for my students to become geographically literate, while at the same time becoming excited about the wide world around them!
