I am a kindergarten teacher at P.S. 185, which is located on 112th Street in Harlem, New York. Our school is a small community based school which services children from Pre-K to 2nd. grade. Our student population is African, African-American, Asian, and Hispanic. 85% of our children receive free or reduced lunch. Last year our school implemented a comprehensive science program, which includes units that cover Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space and Technology. Part of Space and Technology is learning how things work. Concepts children need to understand are: what are simple machines, how do they work, why do we use them, and how do they help us? We investigate gears in a clock and how a bicycle works. What I would like from Donor's Choose is a complete set of simple machines so my students will have not only the visual, but a hands-on experience of how these machines actually work. They will observe how a lever helps us to lift objects, and what happens when you make a ramp lower and higher. Machines, simple and complex are an important part of our everyday life. I feel that these wooden simple machines will give my young scientists insight and an understanding that complex machines in our world that take us places and make our work easier are made from smaller simple machines.
