How Painting Can Heal

Help me give my students watercolors. I love to use watercolors with Kindergarteners. It is one of the few times my whole class goes silent. They get to play with paint while exploring academic and social-emotional areas.

My Students

My students are a joyful bunch of Kindergartners. They enjoy working and learning together. Each year, I build a strong community focused on being a class family. It is important to me my students learn how to be human and how to treat other humans; no matter the difference. My students like to work hard and play harder. Kindergarteners are the funniest, most creative, compassionate, and bold humans I know. They never cease to amaze me with their optimism for school.

Somethings about me:

I am a Kindergarten teacher. I taught 2nd grade for two years, then I was part of a district-wide layoff. Over 200 teachers were laid off. I was recalled into a Kindergarten position. I was blown away by the Kindergarten world and completely fell in love with it. I furnished and financed the majority of my classroom myself. But I am limited in spending money on new and creative technology because of the financial cost. The most impactful lessons can often be set aside or limited due to a lack of funds. I greatly appreciate any donations that serve my students and their futures.

My Project

Let's Paint!

Last year, I had a class of 20 Kindergarteners all sitting 6 feet apart.

Teachers were told students had to stay 6 feet apart and could not play academic or social games. I struggled to teach without using best practices. Most curricula have students playing games, partner discussions, activities, and small group instruction. All of those academic resources, are not COVID safe. How could I get a group of 20 five-year-old bodies to stay in one spot and learn all day?

I struggled with this concept almost all year; until I bought a class set of watercolors. I never heard my class quieter. Students were engulfed in learning. From then on, we used watercolors for anything we could.

First, the students got to learn about color, line, and shape. We worked on mixing colors to create new ones. We connected emotions to colors. How a person can feel blue, red, yellow, or even green. I tied this learning to our SEL curriculum, The Zones of Regulation. We then learned how to paint lines. I tied in the writing curriculum Handwriting Without Tears. We painted every letter of the alphabet and numbers 1-20. We even created our own watercolor dictionaries. My class used watercolors to learn about shapes. We painted shapes by connecting the dots and learned about vertices and edges. By the end of the year, my class was able to whip out their watercolors, go grab a cup and paper towel, and get to work. They began to illustrate their stories. We painted almost every day from April to June.

This year, I want to start strong. I want to give my students the tools they need to overcome their environment. I believe that painting can do that. Please consider donating to help me achieve my goal.
