My Students
I am a third-year teacher working with about 75 8th graders. We are from a rural area, and the majority of my students come from low-income families.
As with most teenagers, my students struggle to enjoy reading, and I am always looking for ways to encourage them to be better readers.
To do this, it is imperative for me to have an extensive and current classroom library. I try and fill my library with books that can interest all students, no matter where they come from, that way, even the most hesitant reader is bound to find something to interest him or her.
My Project
As an educator, I think that "back-to-school" time is the equivalent to the start of the New Year. There is nothing more exciting to me than revamping my classroom in hopes of making each year more successful than the last! But one of the most exciting things for me to revamp in my classroom is my classroom library.
It's important that I offer my students books that are current and in good condition, and even though we preach to students that they shouldn't judge a book but it's cover, they do.
A student is more likely to wander over to a book that looks new and exciting over one with yellowing pages and a torn cover. This project will give me the ability to further extend my classroom library and hopefully reach even more students with my eclectic selection.
