How Hot Is Too Hot?

Help me give my students soil thermometers, compost thermometers, and corner brackets for framing.

My Project

Our students love our school garden and we recently had our first lesson for the second graders on how to measure temperature and why we need to know the temperature of certain things.

The way to tell if a compost pile is working is that the materials are composting with the generation of heat.

Compost thermometers tell if there is heat being generated in much the same way those cooking a turkey use a meat thermometer to tell if the meat is cooked.

Some plants won't grow until the ground temperature gets to a certain level. For example, you can plant potatoes too early, but they won't start growing until the ground temperature reaches 50 degrees.

We want to add to our current temperature measurement stations that are focused on air temp and weather to include these other uses for thermometers. The students loved hearing about these other uses.
