How Fast Is Too Fast?

Help me give my students more materials to better understand physics! These photogates will help us measure the speed of objects including go-karts that the students will make.

My Students

My students love to engage in hands-on learning! We've been trying to do more learning by doing activities, particularly with the new SEEd standards that Utah Science classes are engaging with.

Our physics classroom has materials inherited from a teacher who had taught a very long time (and did great!) but could use some updating.

As a goal, I've tried to minimize lab fees while at the same time applying for grants so as not to burden my students families as the majority are low SES.

My Project

These materials will help my students conduct and measure the speed of objects that they build! Two labs that we'd like to do are:

1) Measuring the speed of racers that students build and are powered by compressed air.

Without these sensors, it'll be much harder for students to decide if their racer has a hard time getting going or if it slows down too much from friction.

2) Measuring the speed of rolling objects that are discs, tires, spheres, or hollow spheres. If they all have the same mass, which will roll faster? How much faster? These sensors will help us tell which ones roll faster!

These will also help in the visualization of these labs for my students who miss a class - it's a lot easier to tell which objects move faster when we can share the data in the videos!
