There are many ways to present nutrition education, but gardening provides a fun, interactive way to teach and learn healthy eating habits. Growing healthy students is just as important as growing students who can read, write, and do math!
The students at my school want to learn.
They come from a high poverty area, but are a part of a community who cares. The school is a Title 1 school with free breakfast provided to all students who attend. Money is tight, but the students and staff are doing everything they can to continue learning and growing! Our students do not generally have the opportunity for a lot of life experiences, but work hard and do their best always, despite that.
My Project
My students need supplies and materials to learn how to start a school garden. Providing the students in my school these supplies will help them understand the hard work needed to grow food for others and themselves. This will grow their appreciation for farmers that grow food for them to buy at the store. Students will also have the opportunity to see the garden through to the growth of plants from planting a seed. Imagine the lesson in "sticking-with-it" they will receive from watching their plants grow. Another lesson learned from these materials is of nutrition. Eating fruits and vegetables is important for teachers to reinforce at school. This is a great opportunity for that!
Through a partnership with FEED USA, you can help provide the students at my school the opportunity to learn how to care for a garden, as well as teach them valuable information about nutrition.
These supplies will also help students appreciate and understand the hard work of farming. Nutrition education through school gardening will increase children's knowledge about fruits and vegetables and will improve their attitudes towards healthy eating habits. Help us garden together!
