My Students

Educating our children in the environmental sciences is important because the USA is in the midst of one of the most profound and rapid societal shifts in history. Today's generation of children is the first to grow up indoors. Their plugged-in lives are often devoid of exploring the natural world.

Science of yesterday...An uncomfortable space, snoring, boring and drooling abounds.

Help me change that with "How Does Your Garden Grow! I want for my students to have concrete experiences with hands-on materials to help them better understand science concepts. 21 century skill development requires a wealth of technological tools. Making science visible and less abstract through using Pasco probeware enables the students to see actual digital representations of what we are studying. The probes collect the data for us. Our school has economically disadvantaged students who cannot afford basic necessities let alone high priced gadgets and toys to aid in their learning. While other school systems are able to provide these tools to students in every facet of their school life, budget constraints make it impossible for our school system to provide needed tools to our student body. If we teach our students self sufficiency then we can help irradiate poverty one student at a time.

My Project

How Does Your Garden Grow is a Green School initiative that wishes to educate our elementary students about reusing, recycling, composting, and nutrient tea creation. All of these sustainable practices will be systematically introduced to students in the hopes to create a group of adults well versed in sustainable environmental stewardship. Our projects major goal is to teach students to build vertical hydroponic gardens. We will be utilizing DIY vertical hydroponic gardening supplies and create a sustainable system with solar powered fountain pumps that will be powered with our row lights. The system will be monitored with Ward's WIFI data collection system, pH probe, light sensors, and digital timers will provide just the right amount of light for our garden to grow. We will collect yard and compostable school lunch waste to create nutrient teas in our Yimby Tumbler and Hydrofarm buckets. This will provide the proper nutrients for our plants to grow without soil. Our youth must be educated early to ensure the planet's future.

The most lasting impact of this project is to help our students to anticipate charity and prevent them from ever experiencing poverty.

If we give our students the knowledge that they need to care for our environment they not only can care for themselves in a sustainable way, they can also provide food for others. This also leads to environmental stewardship, which will help our students create a smaller carbon footprint. These practices make for a brighter future for many generations to come.
