My Students

Have you ever been confused by new technology? Imagine that you are a fourth grader using a scientific calculator for the first time. It would be so helpful if our teachers had an overhead calculator to demonstrate the calculator's usage to our students!

Our students are fourth graders in a low-income, urban setting in Illinois.

There are five different fourth grade classes in our large public school. The fourth graders are very excited to be using calculators during Math for the first time! We are so happy that these eager young minds have the chance to work with new technology, but they could use some help.

My Project

We would love to have a Texas Instruments overhead calculator for each of our fourth grade teachers. This way, when introducing the calculator for the first time, we teachers will have a model that our students can follow. Having these overhead calculators would help eliminate a lot of the "Teacher! I need help! How do I use this?" requests from our students. The fourth graders could easily follow along with their teacher by watching the teacher use the calculator on the overhead. Since our fourth grade teachers have about 33 students in each of their classrooms with no assistants, it is important to use whatever technology we can to make it easier to teach our students the ins and outs of the calculator.

The calculators help our fourth graders score higher on state tests.

They help struggling students feel confident and give them a sense of success for the first time in Math. They allow high achieving students to go even further than the fourth grade Math curriculum. Donations to this project will go a long way in helping our fourth graders succeed in Math!
