An old proverb says:
I hear... and I forget,
I see ...and I remember,
I do... and I understand.
I teach a 1-2 grade class of students with autism with a 6:1:1 ratio. I teach in a public school in NY. Our mission is to maximize students' learning potential by modifying and adapting materials and content to their unique needs.
The nature of their disability makes it hard for my students to understand abstract concepts, especially scientific investigation. Therefore, my students require hands-on learning. Hands-on learning is the only way students can directly observe and understand science. As students develop effective techniques for observing and testing everything around them, they learn the what, how, when, and why, of things with which they interact.
Unfortunately very little science materials are available to my students to learn about the weather and how it changes. How does the change of the weather affects plants, animals and humans?
To get the process started three complete kits will be needed in the order of teaching: the weather activity kit, plants kit and animal kit. Each kit includes cards with engaging activities, materials needed to complete experiments and picture cards. To supplement hands-on learning the students will read corresponding books before and after investigation. The students will not only use tools to observe and track the weather, plant growth and animal changes, but they will analyze information from weather maps plant/animal charts.
By funding this project you will make it possible to get the students involved in a total learning experience which enhances their ability to think critically. The students must plan a process to test a hypothesis, put the process into motion using various hands-on materials, see the process to completion, and then be able to explain the results.
