My students need variety of books from author Gail Gibbons like The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree, From Seed To Plant, Farming, Ladybugs, & more. They also need a Hokki stool & a Kore wobble chair.
My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another. They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information.
Learning about how food goes from the farm to the table will help my students lead healthier lifestyles.
Through this project not only will they learn about eating nutrient-dense food, but they will also learn about how the food makes it to our local supermarkets.
My Project
When reading Social Studies Unit 4, “Using Our Resources”, my students often ask how we get food today. In our city, the land where we once grew food is now being replaced by homes. We no longer have local farms and the kids ask how our food gets to the supermarket. This kid-inspired project will give my students the answers to their question, where does our food come from?
I’m requesting 8 different books by author Gail Gibbons to teach my students not only how their food goes from the farm to the table, but also the importance of eating nutrient-dense food.
The books Farming & From Seed to Plant will help students understand how food is grown. The books, The Fruits We Eat & The Vegetables We Eat, will help students learn about nutrient-dense food & the importance of eating a well balanced diet. The books Monarch Butterfly, Pigs, Spiders, Ladybugs will help students understand that nature plays an important role in our food process & that we depend on these animals and insects. The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree ties the entire unit together by following a tree through the entire growing process.
After trying a Hokki stool & a Kore Wobble in the class next to us, my students asked if we could get them too. Requesting these chairs will make the goal of being active for at least 60 minutes a day attainable for kids because movement will be built into times when they would otherwise be sitting. This movement will allow students to remain fully engaged in the learning process while getting meeting their physical need to move.
It’s important for students to develop healthy habits now. Through this project they’ll learn about nutrient-dense food & the importance of being active every day.
