Have you ever tried to find the word you need to spell in a dictionary? Sometimes it takes someone with a college education to be able to figure out how to get the word close enough so you can find it in a dictionary. I am exaggerating, but I’m sure you have had an experience trying to find the right word and just wish you could use your spell check on your computer. If you are as old as I am you never had the opportunity, growing up to use a spell check on a computer, because there was no such thing.

I teach 6th grade in a high poverty school. I have many students in my room who love to write. I want to put the resources in their hands to help them become the best writers and readers possible. There is a small devise called a spell checker. A spell checker can be held in your hands and used anywhere. I am asking for half a class set of spell checkers so my students can look up words easily. A spell checker is very similar to a computer spell checker. The difference is on a computer the program the student is using to write a paper will often tell you when the word is misspelled. When you are on the computer that is a very useful function but because of that function we are not allowed to let our kids use the spell checker on the computer for the state wide writing assessment. What my state does allow is the small hand held spell checkers because you still have to recognize the word you’ve miss spelled before you can correct it.

When I worked at a high end, high income school I was able to have an entire class set of spell checkers. What a difference having this tool was for students when they were working on writing assignments. I am asking for 16 hand held spell checkers, which gives me half a class set.

I am very excited to get this resource. A spell checker will empower my kids to continue to write and edit with less frustration!
