Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students in my second grade class need extra support in phonics and spelling. Because many of my students are second language learners, spelling and learning English language rules has been very difficult for them. Because many of them speak with an accent, they do not hear the English letters as they are normally spoken, often confusing "d" for "t". One way to help them with the language is to let them physically manipulate the letters to make words. An activity called "Making Words" shows students how they can physically use words they know how to spell to help them spell words they are not sure how to spell. The activity looks like this: Spell the word "cat". Now replace one letter to make the word "bat". Now change one vowel to make the word "bit". Now add a vowel to make the present tense of the word "bite". And so on. For this project, my students each need a set of manipulative letters and a letter holder. This activity helps in word recognition when reading, letter recognition with spelling and writing, and pronunciation.
