Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students live in federal housing or low-income apartments near my school. My school has about 700 students and is a school-wide Title I, Provision II school, which means that 82% or more of the students are eligible to receive a free or reduced-price lunch.

Many of my students are second language learners and may be the first students in their families to attend college.

My students participate in a program that focuses on STEM activities that include stewardship of the marine environment that is close to the school and their community.

My Project

My students have been studying marine science since sixth grade. They have walked three miles to the beach every month to monitor mole crabs. They have conducted population counts of the birds that migrate to the creek next to the school's PE field. The conduct water quality testing at the same creek, every week and help the sixth graders monitor and clean the beach every month.

Now, my seventh and eighth graders will put everything together that they have learned about their marine environment by going to a science camp on Catalina Island.

Many have never gone camping nor have they experienced a night away from home. On Catalina they will snorkel, kayak, hike, and participate in marine lab activities and discussions. They will come back from the island wanting to learn more science! This project will cover the cost of bus transportation to get to and from the boat that will take them to the marine science camp on Catalina Island.
