My Students
My school has been serving K-6 students, both military dependents and local residents, since 1956 as part of the Hawaii State Department of Education. My classroom integrates a remarkably diverse population that includes Filipinos, Caucasians, African-Americans, Samoans, and Asian-Americans.
I am an elementary school special education teacher, teaching students where small groups, close proximity, and acceptance is very important. My students range in abilities and grade-levels, which makes my classroom a fun and unique environment to be a part of.
My Project
My students love reading. They love following books in a series as well. They love reading books that are at their level or being read books that are at their instructional reading levels.
Studies show that giving students the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of reading materials in their favorite genres and topics develops the “wonder and joy of reading that can only be derived from reading” (Fletcher & Lyon, 1998).
From Biscuit, to Froggie, to the many other series of books selected, this project funds our future. My students already struggle with reading so its crucial to make sure they read what they want to read and through intrinsic motivation.
