With the combination of Thinking Maps and pictures, 2nd graders in my class use dual coding to become fantastic critical thinkers!
The students in my classroom are high achieving 2nd graders who love to come to school.
Our community school is close knit and we enjoy the ever changing population. We all learn from one another. My students have diverse interests, but all are excited by art and technology. Most have grown up with technology, yet are limited due to a lack of resources at school.
My Project
The 2nd grade visual arts standard states: Students will perceive and describe repetition and balance in nature, in the environment, and in works of art.
With the help from Disney, my students will access information using technology (iPad), and find realistic, artistic, and black line images of a monarch butterfly. After recording their findings in words, students will be able to draw their own monarch butterflies. Using thinking maps along with visuals help students retain information and apply it with greater success. With the right tools, anything is possible.
Because of the limited number of technology devices in the classroom, it is difficult for all students to have access at school.
Having a new iPad in the classroom will add a new technology station, enabling an entire table of students to conduct research. A second grader can look up images of a Monarch Butterfly and draw it!
We will implement this project as soon as the materials become available and all kids have access to learning with technology!
