This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Not every student enjoys science, but what if we can bring art into the science lab? My goal is to merge chemistry and art in order to get every student engaged in learning.
Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in a rough neighborhood, but my students travel from all over the South Side and beyond to attend.
My students are 71% African-American and 25% Hispanic, and over 69% are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. They are driven and motivated; they like to explore scientific concepts and to challenge themselves in every way possible.
My Project
My students will use these materials to explore chemistry through a color themed stoichiometry unit. We will also touch on energy and the electromagnetic spectrum in the same unit. My students will begin by using the calculators to determine quantities of various chemicals needed to synthesize a variety of dry pigments. (The chemicals are on order now thanks to Donors Choose!) After they have made the pigments, they will use the spectrophotometers to determine what wavelengths of light are reflected or absorbed by the different colors they see.
Sometimes the most artistically inclined students are turned off by math and science.
My goal is to use these materials to show my chemistry students how interrelated the fields of art and chemistry truly are.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Namowicz and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
