How Clean Is Your Water? Is Bottled Really Better?

My students need iPads, protective cases, and water test kits to research and create digital projects analyzing environmental issues and solutions.

My Students

I teach math and science core, incorporating hands-on, project-based learning in my classroom. I also teach a speech and technology elective, helping students develop 21st-century presentation skills. My classes incorporate STEM and STEAM skills for engineering.

We incorporated technology into all subjects of my classroom and my goal is to promote as much creative, innovative learning as possible.

Every year of my teaching I have volunteered my time tutoring my students after school, since so many struggle with the rigorous challenges of complex learning concepts. Last year, I created online tutorials for both students and parents. I need additional materials to create an even greater impact on classroom learning and interventions. I want to learn how to incorporate 3D models, diagrams, and engineering into my elective and core classroom, encouraging student engagement and achievement. Students are learning code, but I want them to learn about the engineering as well. We are studying the earth, but I will have them further research sustainable forms of energy, recycling, and human impact.

My Project

How much do you remember about your sixth grade textbook? My students need to go beyond the curriculum and investigate their scientific findings using innovative technological resources. With the help of Tom's of Maine, we can acquire these tools and test kits to conduct real-world experiments. I have a great bunch of learners with inquisitive minds and they ask fantastic questions. Is bottled water really better than tap water? How much energy can we save by making minor adjustments? We will teach for the planet and answer these essential questions. This project will help students gain basic understanding of chemical in our environment and find solutions to maintain a better environment. The materials are helping with projects using engineering and innovation to help the environment. The iPad helps all learners practice quality presentation skills and helps English learners have access to information in a variety of ways. They will use the iPads to conduct research and share their findings and presentations with the world. The pencil will be used to draw and display details of the environment and researching. The kit is an effective hands-on way to teach about the effects of pollution on water. The project will also help students conduct experiments to find information on chemicals and organisms that pollute our water and find solutions to help our environment. Students need to apply their real-world findings to a real-world audience. They use the iPads to create lessons of their own, displaying more than just their findings. Moreover, students will share possible solutions to help the environment and reflect on their findings. Finally, they will share their resources with the entire world using interactive apps and providing online presentations.
