I teach Science, Social Studies, and Health to 3 second grade classes. These classes are members of EIP, or Early Intervention Program. The students have been identified as students who do/will struggle in school.
Our school system is in a very small community that is growing rapidly. Because of the slow economy there isn't enough room in the budget for textbooks for every child, let alone extra resources. As a teacher I try to look "outside the box" for ways to help my students understand the concepts that are presented to them.
By receiving the models for life cycles and space the students will be able to not only see how our world works, but have the chance to touch it. The students will be able to use the models of the animal life cycles as a puzzle, placing the correct animal stages together, and a writing prompt, to help them write about the stages of the animal's life. The students will be able to hold the manipulatives and actually touch a model rather than just see a picture in a text. By receiving the model of the solar system the students will see how each of the planets orbits the Sun. With this model the students will be able to investigate the position of the Sun in relation to a fixed object on Earth at various times of the day. They can literally grasp our world with their fingertips so that they can better understand it.
Your help will ensure that my students grasp concepts of how our world works by allowing them to manipulate it. By allowing these students to have hands on learning you are ensuring them a successful educational experience.
