How Can We Engage Students in Learning Through Nature Journaling?
Help me give my students individual sets of art materials supporting them to work safely in and out of the science classroom as we continue to explore the natural world from our urban environment.
How often have I heard students say, "I can't draw”? Drawing has a practical place in the sciences, including modeling phenomena, honing details & observations, studying complex relationships, and more. Nature journaling increases student comprehension while fostering positive relationships between students, teachers, and their communities.
These sketchbooks, pencils, erasers and ink will be used to create a bridge between our science curriculums and the natural world.
We will take time to explore drawing activities and discuss possible real-world applications, including brain breaks, modeling, and illustration techniques. The tissues will continue to reinforce needed hygiene practices. Engaging in scientific illustration and nature journaling has shown to engage students in learning while enhancing their creative expression in science.
With these supplies students will be introduced to nature journaling in nearby public spaces as viewed from our classroom, explore how live webcams create engaging and immersive virtual experiences, and discuss how digital journaling can be used to increase ecological perspective and scale, from a local to global experience.
