I am teaching at a Title One school with an 80% or more population of students who receive free and reduced lunch. Many of these students have not been exposed to some of the wonderful experiences our world has to offer. My fifth grade students really enjoy being able to see real world objects that relate to what we are studying. There has never been a student who does not wish to see something up close and to examine the specimen. Unfortunately, some objects that have been brought in to our classroom are fragile or may have print that is too small for the children to read. I would love to have an opaque projector to enlarge these objects for further study. When an object is magnified and projected onto a screen or wall, the children can get up close to examine what they may not have been able to see with the naked eye. The projector would also be useful in creating a student painted mural. I currently have a large wall that begs to be painted. With the projector, we could, as a class, decide what mural could be painted on that wall that would represent and embody the fifth grade curriculum. When each child is actively involved in the decorating of his or her classroom, it begins to feel more like there is some ownership and responsibility to take care of the room. I currently only have fifteen children in my classroom, but that number will swell to 23 next year. With more children, the need for the projector will increase. More children will be able to easily view what it is we are sharing. I hope that at the beginning of each year, we will paint a fresh mural to welcome others to our classroom and make it our own.
