I teach a motivated, ready-to-learn group of 18 students at a Title I school in an urban area. Our classroom consists of 16 ESOL students ranging from ELP 1-4, with 7 different home languages currently spoken in my classroom. In second grade, students become more independent in their own learning inside and outside the classroom.
Having a diverse classroom leads to engaging conversations, a variety of differentiated lessons, and learning something new every day.
Even with such a huge range of abilities in my classroom, my students hold themselves to a high standard of rigor each day. It takes a lot of work not only on my part, but on the students' part as well to run a classroom that serves not just most, but all students.
My Project
Our classroom is currently 2:1 with Dell Laptops. We use a wide variety of applications and websites, including FlipGrid, Prodigy, MyOn, and Wixie, to accent teaching and aid in our learning. With a high ESOL population, having quality technology is key. Currently, my students have virtual partners on FlipGrid with a 5th grade class from another school. My students love creating and watching videos about their learning in the classroom. However, the headsets we have now do not cancel out background noise and are constantly breaking.
By allowing my ESOL students access to quality technology, you will also be giving them access to a low-risk, high reward educational experience that will give them the confidence to grow as a learner.
My students love using FlipGrid, but with only 2 low-quality headsets, it makes it difficult to use the technology to its full potential. With 10 high-quality headsets, my students will have more chances to interact with technology that can help further their learning.
