Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of economically disadvantaged ELL's live in the city of Houston, TX, which was deviated by Hurricane Harvey. Many of my students have went though unthinkable trauma. I will have more students as they get placed from losing their schools.
My students are sweet, smart, and deserve a chance.
For my students, going to school has always been a treat. All of my students look forward to it because their classroom is bright and colorful, neat and organized, and their teachers love them. This is the highlight of their day - many go home to poor conditions and unsatisfactory living arrangements. The exposure my students get here in my classroom and this school, will the most important they get in their lives.
My Project
My students are all economically disadvantaged and mainly English language learners. While I cannot control the situation these students go home to, I can make their classroom a positive and exciting place that utilizes the best tools our age has to offer. They love to use technology but there isn't much to go around. Learning on a highly engaging tool such as the iPad, students will stay on task and focused, as well as develop an appreciation for the tools we use to learn at school. Additionally, going through such a traumatic experience, they need a way to feel a sense of normalcy, and a way to forget about their home life.
These students will be able to explore beyond the four walls of their classroom and expand their minds to a world bigger than they ever imagined - a world bigger than the flooded and disaster-stricken city they have to face every day.
The iPads will be a part of their stations during small group rotations. They'll be able to build literacy skills and do assessments on the iPads. With the possible expansion of my classroom, this will be a very needed addition to the tools they can utilize on a daily basis.
