My Project

There are many barriers to student engagement in the classroom, one being irrelevant content. At our High School, we have adopted the GLEAM model for delivering content: Grade-level, Engaging, Affirming, and Meaningful. We believe in delivering content that students can take into the next season of life with them. The books we need are not just stories, but different windows through which we understand life.

In a linguistically diverse English II classroom, access to diverse and relatable literature is crucial for academic growth and development.

One particular book that we would love to have in our classroom is "The House on Mango Street" written by a Hispanic woman. This book not only reflects cultural diversity but also offers content that is relatable to students' own experiences. By reading books written by authors who share their background, they feel seen, heard, and understood. This emotional connection positively impacts their connection to the classroom, leading to improved English literacy skills.

We will be reading this book in class in English. To help our students, we will be giving them guided notes to define any difficult vocabulary words or explain confusing English idioms. Our students who are new to the country or new to English will be given a copy in Spanish so they can participate.
