House of Cards: Writing and Research

My Project

This year, I will be teaching AP Seminar, AP Research, and an elective science class. In all of my classes, research and writing are particularly emphasized - these skills will be used throughout their education as well as in life.

This project provides the materials needed for my students to improve their research and writing skills.

As students read an article related to their topic areas, they will jot down evidence, claims, reasoning, questions, and connections, each on a color-coded sticky note. They will then use these sticky notes for arranging their arguments as well as supporting a discussion. The colorful index cards will be used to help them create a strong argument, with them writing their claims, evidence from their research, and their own reasoning, as well as counterarguments and rebuttals. They will visually see how strong their argument is by building their house of cards with their color-coded cards. Lastly, they will use the white index cards to prepare for their oral presentations.
