My Students

My students live in a Utah town in a low-income neighborhood. Hardworking parents often don't have time or don't know how to fully support learning at home. Frequently, the effects of poverty manifest in a child's inability to focus and tune out distractions which are skills needed for learning.

My students love learning and are committed to building a better future through hard work and practice!

Title I schools face the challenges of poverty that other schools do not. Research is documenting the impact that poverty has on education. Nearly 60% of students in our school receive free or reduced-price meals. A third are native Spanish speakers. My students need a school that understands their special challenges and intervenes to help.

We are preparing today's students for the jobs of tomorrow. Essentially, we are teaching students the ways to think critically and not just training them on vocational skills. I do not even know what jobs we will need in thirty years, but I do know that they need to read, do the math, think analytically, and problem solve.

My Project

Research suggests that although digital books and digital reading is ubiquitous, it may not be best for developing reading skills. For a reader to comprehend and become strong in inferential meaning of texts, they must first have powerful imaginations. Children need to create mind movies of the text they read. Also, digital reading results in shallower processing, provides no "visual placeholders" so word mapping is truncated, and the act of scrolling drains our working memory, thus interfering with constructing meaning.

Reading frenzies can begin when a long anticipated sequel is released or when a favorite author releases a new title.

Help me give this excitement to my students with previewed and highly recommended, physical books.
