This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

With the emphasis placed on standardized tests these days, I am constantly trying to find new ways to help my students prepare that are fun and interactive. Hot Dots will allow my students to study in a different way that will be much more enjoyable and beneficial.

My 5th grade students are amazing!

Over half of them have special needs of some sort, whether special education, English as a Second Language learners, or other accommodations. We are a high-poverty school, with 75% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is a small neighborhood school, but it is quickly growing. The students here are sweet kids who have a desire to learn and do their best. We are excited to see each other every day and learn something new together.

My Project

These Hot Dot quizzes are great! They are grade level appropriate, and focus on all different areas of Language Arts, Reading, and Math. The students can work at their own pace to finish each card, and the Hot Dot pen gives them immediate feedback on their performance. I am requesting a set of 6 pens so that this may become a center or a small tutoring group activity. The students will welcome the change from normal practice, and they will love to work at their own pace.

With standardized test time quickly approaching, the old saying "drill and kill" comes to mind.

We have to spend so much time "drilling" skills and test taking strategies, that I feel like I am "killing" my students' spirits and desire to learn. I truly believe that these Hot Dot quizzes will change that. They will thrive on the independence these tools provide.
