My Students
Everything I needed to learn, I learned in Kindergarten. I never understood how true that really is until recently, when I started teaching Kindergarten! Kindergarten is the learning foundation, the building block for all learning. ABCs & 123s start the learning.
I teach kindergarten at a school where children are haunted every day by the terrors of their past, be it Hurricane Katrina of 2005 or the crime and turmoil they see and hear everyday.
Our students are fighters. They work hard to achieve goals that others may think are too much for them, and they strive to do the right things in life and to be the change our society needs. Almost all of our students receive free lunch due to poverty.
The children in kindergarten this year were born just before or after Hurricane Katrina. They are fresh, eager minds. All they've seen in their short lives so far is turmoil and devastation; it's my job to make them accomplished learners! In the Fall, our school will be moving again, for the second time this year. This move will give us the opportunity to provide our students with a safer, complete education with help from amazing donors who provide us with materials we would not otherwise have in our classrooms.
My Project
A few years ago, I taught a group of second graders who despised school, disliked most activities and only wanted to watch movies. Then, a miracle happened- someone gave me a set of Hot Dots cards and pens. My second graders used those cards daily! They didn't realize that while they were 'playing' I was actually providing them with more instruction than they'd be open to before then. I would love to see that same excitement over Hot Dots from my kindergarten students. Hot Dots, Jr. cards are perfectly designed for the littlest learners. The skills are ideal for literacy and math centers! This Hot Dots set is great remediation throughout the year as well as the skills quizzed on these cards are some of the same skills we assess for our report cards.
This project would be instrumental in my classroom.
The students will LOVE the opportunity to use the doggie pen to practice, check and recheck their own learning! Hot Dots gives students the opportunity to be the teacher and the build their own self confidence! Your generosity could make that happen!
