My Students

I teach in a classroom with 29 second graders. I do not have enough time to sit with every student to help them learn their math facts. The hot dot program allows students to assess themselves on whether they answered the math fact correctly or not. I see this as a great tool for my classroom.

We are a public school.

My students come from many different ethnic backgrounds. Most of my students are low in academics. My students do not get a lot of help from home, because most come from families where both parents are working outside of the home. So, by the time parents come home and fix dinner, clean, etc., there is not much time left for helping their children.

My Project

My students will be able to use the Hot Dot pens and quiz cards to drill themselves with their math facts. I will set these up in a center in my classroom where the students will be given time to use them every day. These would be a great tool, because they would allow all of my students, no matter which level they are on, to practice their skills that are needed. Those who have mastered adding and subtracting will be able to move on to multiplication and division. It will also free up some time for me to work with others who need more one on one help/time.

I can see these manipulatives being a huge success in my classroom.

I will use them in centers where children can use them everyday. I could also give them to all of the students and have time to work with those who need one-on-one time or even a small group of struggling students. If my students leave second grade not knowing their math skills, it will only get worse for them having to learn multiplication and division in third grade. These skills are important and necessary for my students.
