I teach in a pediatric psych unit where I educate kids from grades K-8. I am trying to create a safe and happy environment for my students while they are admitted at the hospital since many of them come from foster homes where, unfortunately, they don't have that type of care. I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficult time academically in school.
My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
At the Brooklyn hospital where I work, we, unfortunately, have limited supplies and kids often have to share textbooks. I usually make extra copies, that way all the kids can have their own text to look at. The printer I currently use is what the kids would call ancient! It takes forever to print and sometimes I have to hit it on the side to get it to work (not joking). Getting this new printer would really make it so much easier to have these copies ready for the kids more quickly, which would then allow me more time to focus on the lesson itself. Also, in the medical unit at the hospital, we can’t have the kids share papers due to bacteria and germs. Having this printer will allow me to print multiple copies to hand out. I added ink and paper to this order because we go through it so quickly here and it is a burden always buying these items myself.
