My Students are kindergarten and first grade students with special needs.

Their mild to moderate disabilities range from mental retardation to Autism, to a learning disability, to emotional disturbance, and to developmental delay. They require all learning modalities (i.e. visuals, kinesthetic, auditory, and tactile), patience, repetition of new concepts, exposure to new things, and lots of love! Our school is a Title 1 school that is located in the city of Los Angeles. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area where every student qualifies for the free lunch program. Most of my students are delayed in some or all of the following areas: social emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development. Most of my students do not own a computer at home. My students have access to two outdated IBM computers that turn off and on when they please. Through other forms of donations, we obtained a projector that we're unable to use because we do not have a laptop to connect to.

My Project

Providing my students with a laptop is providing an additional supplemental tool to learning. The use of a laptop will enhance lessons, motivate students, and will give them access to the curriculum in a fun exciting way. Projecting interactive lessons in math and reading promote disguised learning. Students will be able to explore the enVision math curriculum games, California Treasures online games and stories, online Social Stories, Voyager Ticket to Read activities, and other online resources for students. I can also use the laptop with the projector to present vocabulary pictures and download picture files for every subject area instead of printing them out (no more wasting ink and paper). Showing visuals, videos, and playing music related to what is being taught will greatly benefit my students and make it more enjoyable. In addition, monitoring each student’s progress, managing IEP’s, and assessments will become much easier. My students need this type of instruction and exposure. They deserve the best education as well as keeping up with today’s technology. Help me expose my students to technology, foster their learning, and expand their imagination.

Imagine this, students will be highly motivated and have fun.

Students will have access and exposure to interactive math and literacy activities with wonderful animation that is sure to get their attention for longer periods of time and that will reinforce and deepen understanding of material/skills. Enhance lessons during whole group, small group, and individual instruction. Students will learn to maneuver a mouse and access websites. We can finally use our projector! Differentiate instruction through the use of computer software, power points, games, videos, songs, etc.
