My Project

A pollinator garden at school offers students all the emotional, academic, and physical benefits of gardening while also introducing them to deeper environmental concepts and concerns. The benefits of gardening include improved focus, lessened anxiety, and boosted memory. We feel that students who garden will have better science and math skills, possibly even scoring higher on standardized tests. We are a Title I-funded school and majority of our families are low to no income. This opportunity to guide students in lessons outside the classroom will give them experiences they may not have access to outside of school. Our goal of a pollinator garden includes meeting Oklahoma science standards and promote conservation action through education and awareness. Students will research and plan for local plants that attract pollinators to a garden, how to best care for their garden by Increasing their understanding of pollinators and their importance as well as understanding the partnership between plants and pollinators. Students will then take action to help pollinators by developing a pollinator garden and schoolyard habitats to local pollinators. Once they have planted their pollinator plants students will be responsible for daily maintenance. A successful pollinator garden will provide future lessons of data tracking of evidence that pollinators are utilizing the gardens.
