Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are grades K-5, coming from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 89% of our students receiving free lunch. We are a high needs, high poverty population with an enthusiasm for life that often finds basketball serving as the gateway to express their creativity and zest. We are hoping to channel those dreams by transforming our blacktop area into a basketball court. On the court, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to develop attributes of teamwork, sportsmanship, and grit.
My Project
When our students engage in outdoor physical education and recess activities, they are greeted with barren blacktop area and a worn, grass covered field.
The current state of affairs is that the potential basketball court that many of our students dream of lacks hoops.
Students can use the court for physical education in the nicer weather, doubling the capacity of our physical education space. The outdoor court would also enable our students to play basketball on a regulation size court. On a daily basis, the courts can be used during recess to add structure to a time that can often cause problems when there is a lack of structure.
The lessons that can change your life are often the ones’ learned on playing fields beyond the classroom. Winston Churchill was often heard to say that he learned more on the playing fields of Eton than he learned in a classroom. At our elementary school, we are hoping to translate those lessons learned on the basketball court to help students to develop the resilience and ability to overcome obstacles and meet challenges in both the classroom and in life. Please help make our children’s hoop dreams a reality.
