As a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with hands on learning.
My students are funny, clever and creative.
They like to explore, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of our Kindergarten classes are comprised of 75 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual background. Most of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I'm hopeful to create a hands on learning environment where they feel safe.
My Project
Our school is located in an industrial area, which is a long distance away from a community garden. These materials will help students have a space where we hope to engage younger children exponentially so they want to learn, foster a sense of responsibility in our students by making the garden their special place, create significant partnerships with the community, involve parents at school through our garden and teach our young students to be informed consumers who know about their food production.
By starting this garden using all the materials such as 1 Metal Raised Garden Bed Kit - Elevated Planter Box For Growing, Water Hose, VEGETABLES SEEDS, 100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC Non GMO and Quart Organic Potting Mix provided to us we hope to see them using the tools provide to sew the seeds in the soil, learn responsibility by knowing they have to water their seeds and then see the result of beautiful plants growing which bear fruit to them.
We foresee creating a bridge between our student and nature's wonder. Through this we also hope to see an increase in parental and community involvement at our school. In our community, currently there are no venues to let younger students have hands on learning opportunities to simply be outside and to connect to nature-to learn where their food comes from, to watch a butterfly flutter its wings and to breath fresh air.
