This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A day in my classroom starts with demonstrations of real-world, computer-based operations (spreadsheet formula, database sort, java program, etc.). After the demonstrations, students are challenged to create similar projects related to the demonstrations for the remainder of the time.

Students in my classroom come from some of the most economically challenged families in California.

Eighty-eight percent of our students receive free or reduced meals. They are naturally curious about technology because they do not always have it at home. Often times as I reveal a computer program's capabilities, I get several responses of, "I didn't know computers could do that". Our school is a newer school with a lot of technology to offer students, and we are looking to further these offerings with AP Computer Science.

My Project

Students have enough classroom texts to do classroom labs, exercises, and readings. Students will need the software downloaded on flash drives so they can install a free version of the IDE at home. What students need are additional books that prepare the students for the exam. Students will use the Barron's AP Computer Science for exam preparation throughout the course. Finally, the establish the concepts of object-oriented design, the Karel J. Robot book gives a great introduction to objects, classes, and methods. Students will use the Karel books to start learning algorithms and creating methods for developing a Karel run program.

Donations to this project will improve instructional time I have with students.

Students will have opportunities to catch up if they fall behind. Students will be able to read ahead. More importantly, students are going to be given the introduction to programming systems that could lead to further career studies.
