Have you ever struggled to do something? If so, did you like doing it? The answer is probably no. I teach middle school in Danbury, CT. My students are reading 3-4 grade levels behind their peers. Rather than getting to attend specials classes like art, digital media, and languages - they come to my literacy class.
It is so important to offer things they enjoy since they are missing out on the "fun classes."
My students have been working so hard this year, but I am noticing some students are starting to burn out. I would love to offer motivational rewards to encourage their continued effort toward literacy growth.
My Project
Positive behavior plays a huge role in student success. Our school implements a PBIS program to promote positive behaviors not only through recognizing the students by name with a "Great Job" but also by allowing them to be rewarded. The snacks, toys, pencils, stickers, and candy included in this project will allow my students to earn incentives for meeting classroom expectations, working hard to complete classwork, and show them I care about their mental wellbeing. This has been a challenging year in education. Students and teachers are stressed, and these incentives will bring some joy.
My goal is to use these incentives to show these kids not only does positive behavior make you feel good and help you do well in school, but it also can earn you some pretty cool things!
Rewarding the students with these incentives for behavior and continued focus on classwork will lead them toward the path to success as students and members of our school community. These are items students would not typically be able to attain outside of school.
