My students need informational text about owls, materials to dissect owl pellets and educational resources to refer to in our ecosytems of owls unit.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In reading aloud the novel "Hoot" by Carl Hiassen, my inner city fifth graders have become obsessed with owls. I would love to bridge this fascination into our ecosystem science unit and investigate the habitats of these fascinating birds.
My students live in an impoverished neighborhood in an inner city.
99% receive reduced price lunch and can barely afford the required uniform. Most read at at least a year behind grade level and are discouraged at a fifth grade level to pursue academics. Resources are very limited to provide environmental learning opportunities, which are their favorite of course!
The school is very intimidating on the exterior but very warm and inviting on the interior. We do our best to provide a secure, safe learning environment.
My Project
I believe it is my job to find learning opportunities that excite and inspire the kids. In reading "Hoot" the questions about owls are endless, "So they live underground?, I thought they lived inside trees?" "What do they eat?", " Why would anyone want to harm them, they are so cute!"
I want to bridge this fascination into our Science Unit. These kids have limited experience with nature and enjoy it thoroughly. They will be owl scientists, exploring the lives of owls through their pellets! The materials will include everything they will need in our mock "science lab". They will also be provided with informational text to support the report they will write about their favorite bird.
My students will be "doing" the science instead of reading it from our very old outdated science books.
They will learn hands-on about the ecosystem and habitat of an owl. It will be a learning experience they will remember for the rest of their lives!
