My students need colored clay to experience the blending it takes to re-create their actual (individual) skin tones, & sugar skull templates to celebrate the Mexican holiday - Day of the Dead.

My Students

I am a first year teacher on summer break after only teaching one semester of 3rd grade. These students (3rd grade) are at an age where they are now 'aware' enough to ask questions about race, color, & cultural differences. I love how they are anxious to learn about how America has become this melting pot of diversity! I thought my heart would burst last year when we watched the black & white footage of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s. "I Have a Dream" speech. They shushed each other so to hear every word! The conversation afterwards was PRICELESS.

My Project

We teach young children that our skin colors are red, yellow, black or white - when in fact, each individual person's skin tone is a blend of these colors to one degree or another. The class activity will require students to take pieces of different colors of the clay to try and make an accurate representation of their own skin color. I am excited to see the lightbulbs go on as they realize that each of them is a unique 'blend' of colors! The sugar skull stencils will be used to learn about, celebrate, and decorate for the holiday, Day of the Dead: Día de los Muertos.
