Hooray for Graphic Novels

My students need 10 Graphic Novel books that they will love to read!

My Students

I am the librarian at an inner city K-8 Expeditionary Learning School. My older students (4-8) love Graphic Novels. I only have a handful of these types of books, and the minute one book comes back to the library, it is gone within seconds. My library budget is only $500 a year, and I need help!

My students are constantly asking me, "Where do I keep the good books?" They love to read Graphic Novels and are always asking me where they are.

Unfortunately, I only have a handful of these books. If I had a generous supply of Graphic Novels, I know I can get my students to read. These books sell themselves. Even the children who are challenged by reading are not intimidated by Graphic Novels. They are easier to read and the pictures really help the struggling readers to comprehend. Plus, they are considered "cool". My budget of only $500 which buys approximately 28 library ready books. There is never enough money to buy all that I would like to buy, and unfortunately, it is the students who suffer most.

My Project

Graphic Novels are a powerful support of visual literacy using words and images to provide a non-traditional bridge to conventional texts. These books "hook" readers, drawing them into the story by engaging 21st century skills such as vocabulary building, making inferences, and drawing conclusions. If I receive these books, I plan to display them in a special part of the library and have them easily accessible to the students. I know that once they arrive, the students will run to that part of the library.

If a donor is willing to purchase these Graphic Novels, I would so appreciate it.

Since they will be part of the library, they will be able to be continually circulated throughout the student population. It is so wonderful to see a student absorbed in a book, and I know from the few Graphic Novels that I currently own, they are the most popular books in the library. Thank you for your support.
